1 - AnnaSophia Robb (Violet Beauregarde)
Since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, AnnaSophia Robb has been extremely busy, and has accumulated an impressive collection of roles. She went on to score the plum role of a teenage Carrie Bradshaw in The Carrie Diaries, the prequel to Sex and the City. She also played real-life surfer Bethany Hamilton in Soul Surfer, who lost an arm in a shark attack; Bethany herself requested that AnnaSophia play her in the movie. AnnaSophia also has several movies in pre-production due out in 2016. She also finds the time to study at New York University and do charity work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and others.Add to that, a number of awards and nominations, magazine features, and appearances at events, and you can see that she's a very busy young lady. Surprise fact: she'd liked to have played Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. That's rather hard to imagine!
2 - Helena Bonham Carter (Mrs Bucket)
Helena Bonham Carter already had plenty of starring roles under her belt when she played Mrs Bucket, including the tragic Lady Jane Grey and the remake of Planet of the Apes. A recurring role in the Harry Potter movies and appearances in Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland are just some of her many recent roles. She's also played Elizabeth Taylor, Anne Boleyn and the mother of Queen Elizabeth II. Helena has worked several times with Johnny Depp and with her (former) partner Tim Burton. She's become known almost as much for her quirky style and unconventional living arrangements (she and Burton lived in separate, neighbouring houses), although they have two children together. Helena was known in her early career for a number of period roles, but has since gone on to expand her range, even appearing in a musical - Sweeney Todd.
3 - Jordan Fry (Mike Teavee)
Jordan Fry has appeared in a handful of movies since playing Mike Teavee, the most noteworthy being a voice role in Disney's Meet the Robinsons. However, his primary focus these days seems to be in the world of music. He's recorded an EP, and is very involved in community and church activities.4 - Missi Pyle (Mrs Beauregard)
Like many in the acting world, Missy Pyle also has an interest in a singing career. She was part of the duo Smith & Pyle with actress Shawnee Smith, and they recorded an album in 2008. However, they disbanded the duo before recording a second album. Missy has been extremely busy since playing Violet Beauregard's mother, with a number of movie appearances and many TV roles. Among her TV appearances have been roles in Boston Legal, Heroes, Pushing Daisies, The Sarah Silverman Program, The Mentalist and Two and a Half Men. She currently has several movies in post-production. Movie-wise, you may have caught her in Gone Girl and The Artist.5 - Freddie Highmore (Charlie Bucket)
London-born Freddie scored the plum role of Charlie, and like AnnaSophia Robb has built up a substantial list of acting credits. Charlie wasn't his first role, however; he had previously worked on a handful of roles, including in Finding Neverland with his future 'Charlie' co-star Johnny Depp. Freddie went on to voice the role of Pantalaimon, the daemon of heroine Lyra, in the film version of Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass, and is currently filming a mini-series called Close to the Enemy with Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) and Angela Bassett. Freddie's major role has been as the young Norman Bates in Bates Motel, a prequel that portrays the teenage years of the killer from Hitchock's Psycho.6 - Johnny Depp (Willy Wonka)
Johnny Depp hardly needs an introduction, and he's certainly been busy since playing Willy Wonka. Some of his subsequent roles include the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels (the next movie is currently in production), Tonto in the Lone Ranger (which was critically panned), and the artificial- intelligence thriller Transcendence. You can get your Johnny fix with his current role as gangster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, although female fans might be disappointed that he's not his usual pretty-boy self. In recent years, Johnny's private life has garnered as much attention as his acting, after he split up with French partner Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has two children (daughter Lily-Rose has followed her mother into modelling). He then went on to marry the much younger Amber Heard.
7 - Noah Taylor (Mr Bucket)
If you're a fan of Peaky Blinders, you may have spotted Noah Taylor in the second series. He's also popped up in Game of Thrones as Locke, one of Roose Bolton's soldiers, and the series Powers.
His recent movie credits include Edge of Tomorrow and Predestination, so if you're a sci-fi fan you can catch two Noah appearances. Before playing Mr Bucket, he had acclaimed roles as the young David Helfgott in Shine and in The Year My Voice Broke. To add to his talents, Noah is also a musician and artist.8 - Liz Smith (Grandma Georgina)
Liz Smith has long been a favourite on British television when it comes to loveable aunts and grandmas. She finally retired at the grand old age of 90. In fact, she didn't become a professional actress until she was in her 50s, so Liz was a bit of a late starter - and she certainly made up for lost time. After playing Charlie's grandma Georgina, she made a handful of TV appearances, before finally retiring in 2010 after a 40-year career (not bad for someone who only began acting aged 50!).9 - Philip Wiegratz (Augustus Gloop)
Philip Weigratz hasn't done much in the acting world in the last few years, but after playing the ghastly Augustus he appeared in a number of roles on German TV and movies. Augustus was his first English-speaking role, for which he was required to wear a fatsuit. Philip lives in Germany.
10 - Julia Winter (Veruca Salt)
Unlike AnnaSophia Robb, Julia Winter seems to have done very little acting since her appearance as Veruca Salt. Aside from a few appearances as herself, she has no other movie or TV credits.
Nobody seems to have any idea what she's been up to since, or why she hasn't appeared in any other roles. It's something of a mystery, though I did come across the suggestion that she'd returned to her native Sweden to study to be a doctor. Perhaps she simply didn't enjoy acting, and has chosen to remain out of the spotlight. Not all child actors take to the experience, and for every AnnaSophia Robb who remains grounded and happy, there's a Lindsay Lohan who goes off the rails. So whatever her reasons, maybe Julia did the right thing in staying away from the limelight.11 - Franziska Troegner (Mrs Gloop)
Berlin-born Franziska Troegner may not be well-known outside her native country, but she's clocked up a lot of credits on German TV, before and after playing Augustus Gloop's mother. As well as appearing on TV, she's also a seasoned theatre actress who has performed in plays by Brecht. Franziska has also published her autobiography, which translates as Too Thick to be Typecast.12 - James Fox (Mr Salt)
James Fox comes from an acting family (his mother, brother, son and niece are all actors, and his father a theatrical agent), and began working as a child actor back in the 1950s. He has gone on to a distinguished career in film and TV. He often plays period roles, including King George V in Madonna's film W.E. Recently he's popped up in Downton Abbey and the series Death in Paradise. He's the father of Laurence Fox and the uncle of Emilia Fox.As a final note, let's give a shout out to the late, great Christopher Lee. This magnificent English actor graced our screens for 7 decades, bringing us many incredible characters including the father of Willy Wonka in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. RIP Sir Christopher Lee. True acting royalty.
