Can lemon water ruin my teeth?
The honest answer is yes. The high content of citric acid found in lemons can eat away at the protective enamel coating. Enamel provides that all-important protection against the cruder elements. Without it, nerves are exposed. The tooth can decay as a result, and fall out. Once enamel has been significantly eroded, it doesn't grow back again. So, it's wise to learn how to keep your teeth from losing its protective covering which automatically leads to unwanted infections. There are several ways to know if you've incurred enamel erosion. Staining or yellowing of the teeth is a sure sign. If the edges of your teeth appear transparent, this is also a warning. Experiencing continuous sensitivity when drinking hot or cold fluids can also be a sign that your teeth are under duress.
Some simple remedies
Before you ditch the lemon water altogether, there are some simple things you can do to protect your teeth while continuing to reap the health benefits of lemon water. Instead of drinking warm lemon water, take the lemon with cold water instead; heating the lemon juice makes it produce much more acid. If you know you're going to drink lemon water, it is preferable you brush your teeth beforehand and not after.Brushing straight away is like rubbing the acid into your teeth. If you must brush after, wait at least a half an hour. When drinking lemon water, try to avoid letting it touch your teeth at all; using a straw is advised. Instead of brushing, a simple rinse of the mouth is very effective at removing acidic properties. Naturally flavoured waters like mint and cucumber also help to rid the mouth of acidic juices.
Should I stop drinking lemon water?
Absolutely not. Lemon water is still one of the best concoctions we can put in our bodies, so why should we stop taking it? What's important is trying to find an amicable balance that will enhance our physical health but not put anything else at risk. Our teeth are very important and good dental care regimes are by far the best way to keep them in tip top shape. If we carefully adhere to the guidelines outlined above, there's no reason why we can't enjoy the best of both worlds.
