Although separated by 60 years and two continents, two sisters finally reunited. In 1989, Leslie Fagan’s mother revealed to her that she had an older sister. Fagan, now 64, spent almost three decades looking for 67-year-old Joan Crawford-Murray.
Their mother belonged to a strict Catholic family. When she became pregnant, she was urged to hide the pregnancy from her parents by one of her sisters, in 1948. “She stayed with her baby for six weeks, which must have been awful, knowing that she would have to give her up. When the day finally came, she had to sign some documents to authorize the adoption,” says Fagan, who is from Dublin, Ireland.
The young mom read the name and address of the adoptive parents on a form one of the nuns left in the room. Fagan says her mom never forgot the name. That information became useful when she sought for her sister on Facebook in late 2015. It took only a week to find Crawford-Murray living in Perth, Australia.
