Yeti Airlines
Yeti Airlines (based in Nepal) has been involved in the deaths of over thirty passengers and crew and the destruction of two aircrafts over the past decade. They are FAA endorsed, but are banned from flying in EU airspace and are not IOSA certified.
Sriwijaya Air
Although it is the third largest Indonesian air carrier, it lacks in many safety departments. It has no international safety recognition and is banned from flying in European airspace.Although there have been no fatalities there have been a number of incidents resulting in injuries and damage. They have a number of ageing aircrafts that are due to be replaced.
Tara Airways
Tara Airways is a subsidiary of Yeti Air, but its safety record is not that much different. In 2010 and 2011 there were three incidents that resulted in a total of 22 deaths of passenger and crew. The small size of its airplanes make flying over mountainous terrain difficult. Tara Airways is also banned from EU airspace but is apparently working on certification.
Air Bagan
This airline operates out of Myanmar and is allowed to fly in EU airspace. However it is certainly not free of scrutiny.International flights in 2007 were cancelled due to safety concerns and had had two accidents along with a handful of fatalities. They are a bit safer than the previous airlines mentioned and are on course for becoming ICAO certified.
Susi Air
This Indonesian airline hires a number of Western pilots but that is about as far as it goes for safety. They are banned from EU airspace as well as from taking on US embassy personnel. Also, there is no flight crew other than the pilots, so passengers are often free to roam without any supervision and rules will not likely be enforced.
Merpati Airlines
Another Indonesian carrier on the EU blacklist, it has had over 50 casualties in the past ten years. In any case the airline is currently out of operation due to financial problems.
Daalloo Airlines
Somali owned but based in Dubai, it operates across the Horn of Africa and the Arab Peninsula. It has had poor passenger reviews with regard to safety, cleanliness and service.Although there have been no casualties, there were a couple serious incidents. One was an unsuccessful hijack attempt in 2009 and an attempted act of terrorism in 2010. It is banned from EU airspace and has no safety certification.
Ariana Afghan Airways
This is Afghanistan’s largest airline but due to a poor safety record they are banned from EU airspace. They have no certification and do not appear to be changing that any time soon.
Bluewing Airlines
Based in Suriname, it is mainly a carrier in the South American and Caribbean region. It has been on and off the EU’s blacklist and is currently on the list. There have been a number of accidents in the past decade resulting both crew and passenger fatalities.
Scat Airlines
This airline operates in Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries. The good news is that they are FAA approved, but they recently failed an ICAO audit which put them on the EU black list.It also suffered casualties in an accident in 2013. It has shown an interest in improving its safety so keep a look out for them.
Kam Air
Kam Air is the first privately owned airline to operate in Afghanistan. However it is not allowed to fly in Europe. In the past 12 years it has been involved in a number of safety incidents including one crash that resulted in the deaths of 96 passengers and 8 crew members.Other safety incidents include a bomb threat and a tail strike incident that it failed to investigate. It is not ICAO compliant and is banned from EU and American airspace.
The Safest Airlines
So now that you have had a long list of airlines to avoid, who are the safest airlines?Quantas

The Finland based carrier follows with no fatal accidents since 1963. It is also one of the world’s oldest airlines so experience may also play a role.Cathay Pacific Airways
Cathay Pacific received seven stars for its product and safety.Air New Zealand
Air New Zealand has earned its place as one of the ten safest airlines in the world and voted most excellent airline for 2015.Singapore Airlines
Singapore Airlines has the most consistent record in safety and offers the best service in all classes.
Etihad Airways
The UAE carrier is one of the two safest airlines in that country. Safety, according to its chief executive, has always been the number one priority.Emirates
One of the youngest and fastest growing airlines, it is also one of the safest with a seven star rating according to Airline Ratings. If you’re on a budget, then you could fly with low cost carriers like WestJet, Alaska Airlines, Icelandair, Kululu and Monarch Airlines. They may cut corners in some regards, but safety is not one of them!
You can check the website www.airlineratings.com for regular updates and to check any particular airline you are thinking of flying with. If the airline is banned from flying in the EU then chances are it has safety issues. Opting for budget carriers does not put you at a greater risk of being in an accident but you should check the safety rating all the same.
