Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations

1. A Bridge Above the Ground

What purpose could this bridge serve? It’s clear that it was built to create a link from one side of the swimming pool to the other, only the architect seems to have forgotten that it is necessary for the bridge to actually pass over the water to make it useful. This one, however, was built over perfectly good land that already made it possible to pass to the other side on foot. Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
In any case, even if the bridge is useless, that doesn’t make it any less charming. Though it may not function to cross over an obstacle, like any good bridge should, it is, at the very least, a nice looking decorative bridge. In a sense, it still works to cross people from side to side, even if it is completely arbitrary.

2. An Unreachable Door

We use doors everyday; who doesn’t? But in this case, it’s hard to imagine how anyone actually could. From the outside of the building, unless you can fly or jump really high, it seems nearly impossible for someone to open it. From the inside, however, it probably looks like any other door and is likely very easily accessible, although probably very dangerous.Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
It’s probably a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and pay close attention when exiting through doors in this building or you may find yourself in an accidental free fall. Still, it makes you wonder — who was responsible for this design? Was there a secret technology developed for invisible stairs that only architects know about and can use?

3. The Walkway/Skate Park

Having two beautiful quarter-pipe skate ramps placed one in front of the other is a dream come true for skateboarders. The only problem with these ramps is that they’re on opposite sides of a crosswalk on a busy city street. Although it looks like fun for skaters and BMX riders, it’s not very safe for pedestrians and drivers. Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
While there is no doubt that the architect gets points for originality, this skatepark comes at the cost of practicality. If the safety of this setup leaves a lot to be desired, at least motorists are provided with an entertaining show from skaters and bikers. As for pedestrians, they’re left to dodge the oncoming skateboards and bypass the giant ramps as they attempt to cross the street. Unless, of course, they invest in a skateboard, in which case, they’re free to join in. The more the merrier!

4. The Toilet Built Into the Wall

Which came first — the toilet or the wall? At first glance it’s not clear whether it’s a half-toilet that was installed in this bathroom stall or if the wall was built around the existing toilet. In a sense, both possibilities are absurd since half of a toilet is completely unusable. On one hand, there is no way to lift the seat lid and on the other hand, even if it was raised, half of a toilet is just simply not enough. Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
In reality, it’s the wall that was built around the toilet, splitting the bowl in half. The construction job is even more surprising when considering the difficulty of building around the toilet; it would have been much easier to remove it completely before beginning the project. This point alone would suggest that this is a deliberate decorative choice. But while there is no doubt it’s unique, it’s certainly completely useless.

5. The Balcony… Without Access

There are many people who only wish of having a nice balcony to take in the views. The one and only requirement, however, is that the balcony has to be accessible from the apartment. It’s unclear, in this case, whether there is actually a room behind the sealed wall since there are no doors or windows to be seen. If there is, then there must have been a major oversight by the architects. Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
It would be unfortunate and pretty ironic to live in an apartment with a beautiful balcony without being able to enjoy the benefits. Judging by this photo, though, it’s not the only problem this apartment faces, as there are no windows for a source of natural light and fresh air. It’s a shame to see an empty balcony that no one can use when so many other apartments could benefit. But it’s not quite lost on everyone — it certainly serves as a place of tranquility for the birds!

6. A Poorly Positioned Ramp

Installing an access ramp for wheelchairs and strollers is certainly an act with good intentions, and in many places, it’s even required. But intentions are not everything since it’s still necessary that the ramp actually leads users to the building entrance. In this case, however, it’s impossible to open the door without blocking access, unless you can pull off some tricky maneuvering. To effectively use this ramp, you would have to cross to the other side of the door while it’s closed, only opening it once the ramp has been cleared. Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
Using this method, the ramp is far from a simplified solution for helping users gain access to the building. It would almost be easier to try the stairs and manage the few steps. Perhaps the architect should do a refresher course in math to avoid such a miscalculation in the future.

7. Turnstile Stunner

Either the designer in charge of this playground game really does not like children or he completely underestimated their size. Admittedly, the turnstile itself is already a relatively risky game; spin fast enough and you’ll be thrown to the ground or launched through the air. But add a wall that is only a few centimetres above it and it becomes extremely dangerous with guaranteed bad results. Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
With the particular design, kids will surely hit their heads with every turn and rotation, causing, at least, a pretty bad headache or worse, a concussion with the sense knocked out of them — a parent’s worse nightmare. But with the clear and present risks involved with this turnstile, it’s unlikely kids will even try to play. But if they do work up the courage to give it a shot, instead of the echoes of laughter and fun you’re instead likely to hear crying.

8. Parking Meters in the Cemetery

Yes, what you’re seeing is correct — an architect has placed parking meters in the heart of a cemetery. It’s definitely one of the stranger ideas a designer or landscaper could have. It’s difficult to understand the purpose of having a parking meter directly in front of each grave stone in this cemetery. Perhaps it was to limit the visiting time of grieving friends and relatives? That would certainly be quite an insensitive idea. Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
If they’re there to time the dead, are they kicked out of the cemetery if the meter expires? If that’s the case, the cemetery will likely receive a significant income as the people buried there are unlikely to leave their graves anytime soon. Maybe they’re converting the grave sites into parking spaces. It would be a strange plan, but definitely more plausible than the others. One thing that is for sure is that the concept is unique and original — no one else has had the same idea.

9. A Staircase That Leads Nowhere

This staircase is a good example of a classic, vintage staircase. It’s well designed with a sturdy railing and intricately designed metal work. It’s a perfect and fully functional staircase. The only thing you can blame the architect for is the fact that it doesn’t lead to the floor above. In fact, it doesn’t lead to anything except a solid wall. Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
It’s easy to see the shortcomings of this design and what it can actually be used for. Just like the door that leads to nothing, this staircase seems out of place. Maybe they were meant for each other. For now, though, this staircase is reminiscent of Platform 9 ¾ from the Harry Potter series, so who knows if there is a secret entrance at the top that leads to a magical place. But if it doesn’t after all, who says the stairs actually have to lead somewhere, right?

10. Communal Toilets From Sochi

At the time of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, there was a lot of attention surrounding these toilets and their situational defects. The picture was shared across social media and broadcast around the world and became the source of a lot of laughs. Arranged side by side, these toilets are ideal for moment of interaction between athletes after a big competition. That would sound nice if it weren’t so weird. Most toilets are kept apart, surrounded by a stall for privacy. Ten Amazingly Useless Architectural Creations
But after all, the locker room after a sporting event isn’t a very modest place anyway — everyone showers together, so why not use the toilets together, right? It still makes you wonder, though, whether the builders had not had some vodka for which Russia is so famous for before drawing up the plans. But we’ll give them and the toilets the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is, perhaps, a simple Russian tradition unknown to the general public.
